Apartment Hunting in Miami

June 25th, 2009 by Miami Moving

When looking for an apartment in Miami, there are many things one should consider. First and foremost, the apartment-hunter should give enough thought about the space of the apartment he or she is going to lease, especially if he is planning to stay for a long time. In a large city like Miami, finding the perfect apartment is hard and it requires a lot of legwork but certainly possible if you plan ahead of time.

One of the most common mistakes for renters is relying on aesthetics. In most cases of small, cramped spaces, landowners count on visual effects to make their place look bigger. Most of the time, it works—much to the disappointment of the renters who couldn’t even fit their beds to the new place.

Weeks before moving to Miami, you must do your soul searching first. Assess your lifestyle and from there, look for neighborhoods that will fit your needs, more or less. List down your priorities when moving such as jobs, schools, transportation and others; doing this will narrow your choices to a manageable number.

It is also advisable for new Miami residents to get the feel of the city first before signing up for a longterm lease. Not because the city is bad but you might find a better deal in some other parts of Miami along the way, only to end up stuck within your current lease. Here are some additional tips for apartment hunting in Miami:

·    Measure all large furniture you have that you would want to come with you to the new place. Keep the measurement in mind when inspecting an apartment to move into.
·    Always bring a measuring device when apartment hunting. Apply your furniture measurements against the place so you’ll have an idea if your stuff fits the place or not.
·    Check plumbing and electrical lines of the apartment.
·    As much as possible, find an apartment in an area where it is safe. You can ask for referrals from friends and families who live in Miami.

Common Terms You Will Hear During Your Move

June 8th, 2009 by Miami Moving

Moving terms are confusing at times. Apparently, moving companies apply terms that are exclusively used for moving services and transactions only and they have their own set of language that more often than not, too technical for a normal person like you and I. Although some of them can be easily understood by the sound and implication of the term, most of them cannot be deciphered as such. Here are some common moving terms used for a moving transaction:

Accessorial Charges:  These are your additional charges such as packing and unpacking services; unexpected rendered services and other fees that will rise during the moving process. In other words, these are your extra charges.
Appliance Service:  If you are moving an appliance, electronic and electrical devices that will require the professional movers to pack and unpack them to ensure its safety then there will be a fee for that.
Auxiliary Service:  There are times when it won’t be possible for the moving truck to unload your belongings and will have to use a smaller van to complete the transfer. This service is done if there are no park spaces for the truck or it’s impossible for the truck to access the driveway.
Bill of Lading:  The existing contract between the moving company and the shipper.
Flight Charge:  This is an extra charge if the movers have to use the stairs or an elevator to move your things.
Storage-in-Transit or SIT: This is when you need to store your belongings temporarily to a storage facility in between moving to and fro.

Moving Guide- Why Hire Piano Movers

May 22nd, 2009 by Miami Moving

The piano is perhaps one of the more challenging equipment to handle during a move.  They are big, bulky and very expensive.  Because of its weight you might think that a piano is not delicate.  But don’t let the weight fool you.  A piano is a finely tuned musical instrument with over 1000 moving parts, 200 metal strings and it is very fragile.

Sure, an average sized piano can weigh around 1500 pounds.  When moving you will probably think that 5 or 6 buddies to carry the piano will do the trick.   You and the boys will probably wrestle with the piano out the door and into the moving van, and voila, piano moved.  But one false move can scratch the piano’s paint and one hard knock can damage the moving parts and strings inside.  Even worse, the piano might not sound as it used to!

A professional piano mover might be the better choice between the 6 buddies.  Think of it this way, the cost of a professional piano mover would be lower than the cost of having to retune or repair the piano.  You and your friends can also get injured while moving the piano, adding to more medical bills.

A piano is a delicate musical instrument and should be handled accordingly.  Professional piano movers are experienced, have special equipment and packaging materials specifically designed to move pianos.  Save yourself the hassle and hire a professional mover and save on cost and effort!

Moving To a Smaller House

May 18th, 2009 by Miami Moving

Moving is, in itself, poses stress to a normal human being. Aside from all the things you need to secure, inspect and organize for the move, it breaks the familiarity and demands time and attention—things you sometimes forget to give yourself, much less to something as fruitless as moving. Moving, in a way, is considered as a chore; a big chore/huge task that virtually there’s no going around it.

It’s a given fact that moving marks a big change in your life. But, moving to a smaller house is something different and much harder to accept. This is especially true for older adults experiencing empty-nest syndrome or just have to move to a smaller place for better household management. When moving to a smaller house, you are going to downsize your belongings as well or else, it won’t fit your new place.

Usually, a family who is downsizing their household should either sell or give away their excess possession. Some find console on the thought that somebody else will find a suitable place for your priceless belongings while others look forward to the things they can now buy to cheer up their new place; yet others are not ready to let go.

Storage facilities are there to keep your belongings safe, up until you are ready to deal with them. Climate-controlled facilities will protect your things from environmental hazards. Storage units come in different sizes to accommodate your need for space. This will eliminate the urgency to dispatch your belongings while you are still making the necessary arrangements for the move which is quite a handful in itself. With storage solutions available for you, you can deal with the moving more effectively.

April 28th, 2009 by Miami Moving

Self Storage Tips

April 3rd, 2009 by Miami Moving

There are things that we cannot simply give away or bring with us during our move.  So the next option for these items would be to put them in storage.  Before choosing a storage company, consider first the location.  Would it be convenient to you should you need anything from the storage facility?  How much do they charge?  What are they doing to ensure that your belongings are pest and rodent free?  How are their  security measures?

Self Storage companies can rent out climate controlled or non climate controlled storage areas for you to access anytime.  Consider the space.  How much space do you need to store y our belonings?  If you don’t really need a lot of space, then rent a smaller unit.  Even if you have a lot of stuff consider a small unit first then fill it up to the max.

Remember to use uniform size boxes and stack them according to weight.  The heavy ones go on the bottom while the lighter ones go on top.  Fill your boxes to the top.  Half filled boxes tend to collapse when stacked one on to of the other.  Do not store flammable and combustible materials in your storage facility.  If you need to store anything that uses gas, drain the tank before storage.  When organizing your self storage facility, try to put the most valuable items at the back and purchase a strong padlock in order to discourage thieves.

Packing Materials

April 3rd, 2009 by Miami Moving

If you are moving then chances are you are going to need a lot of packaging materials.  In order to cut cost you can call your moving company as they usually purchase their packaging materials direct from the source.  Make sure that you order a lot of tape, boxes, labels and all the necessities.

If you are concerned about all that going to waste, there are environment friendly manufacturers who make “green” boxes.  These are made from recycled materials.  Also you can donate or sell your used packaging materials like boxes to ecobox.com.  They also sell used boxes so you can cut your moving costs even more.

There are also special packaging materials that you can buy for valuables, oddly shaped furniture, antiques and collectibles.  You have to stock up on tissue, cushioning, crates and other packaging materials to protect your valuables.

Stocking up on packaging materials allow you to get an early start on your packing and avoid stress as the big move comes.  Start with items you do not normally use.  If you have items that can be shipped away earlier, pack them up.  This would minimize the things you need to keep track of.
